Christmas Tankas

Christmas time is here.
Presents under trees.
Wrapping up presents.

~~~
Kids making Christmas wishes.
Mom fixing up some dinner.
Girls at church wearing dresses.
Helping with decorations.
Reflections:
I actually kind of like this piece. I'm not a big fan of poetry, or at leasy the poems I write. But I like this one. Before I wrote this, I was thinking about a lot of different things. I had a few ideas as to what I wanted to write this on; Lucas, Benito, my boyfriend, even the Internet was an option that I had considered. I wound up picking Christmas because, well, it was Christmas time. Lots of lights and cheer and a whole bunch of other things which I could choose to write about. If there was one part I would change about this tanka, it would be the part which says "Mom fixing up some dinner." While, yes, that is part of Christmas, mom making dinner and all, I feel like it doesn't 'fit in' with the rest of the poem, I guess you could say. I could've added something about snow or reindeer or even the laughter of the family. That would've been pretty cool. Not only that, but I'm surprised Julia didn't say something about the whole "Mom making dinner" because that just goes along with the stupid "Women belong in the kitchen" stuff everyone jokes about. Haha. My favorite lines would have to be both "Girls at church wearing dresses" because that really is a big part of Christmas, going to church and all (I mean, it is called Christmas, so...) and it reminds me of when I went to church and my mom would take me out to buy a dress. Of course, I don't go to church anymore now that I'm all grown up and believe (or rather, don't) in other things, so there's no need to buy me a dress anymore. I also liked the line "Kids making Christmas wishes" because I know thats a big thing, to children at least. I used to make wishes all the time. I remember my Christmas wish one year (my mom never knew about this one) was for my daddy to come home from Iraq, for good this time. He eventually came home and I was so happy, and Christmas wishes like that just make the whole Christmas time thing special. Christmas time just reminds me of being a kid, and I enjoy that.
